Trump announces trade deal with Indonesia

President Donald Trump has announced a new trade agreement with Indonesia, following what Jakarta described as an “extraordinary struggle” in negotiations, according to CNN.

The agreement reduces the U.S. tariff on Indonesian exports to 19%, down from the previously threatened 32%. In return, Indonesia will lift tariffs on American goods and commit to significant purchases, including $15 billion in U.S. energy, $4.5 billion in agricultural products, and 50 Boeing aircraft (many of them 777s).

Trump disclosed the deal on Truth Social and later told reporters that Indonesia is “known for high-quality copper,” suggesting it may be exempt from the 50% global copper tariff he has proposed to begin on August 1.

Indonesia’s government confirmed the deal on Wednesday, with President Prabowo Subianto reportedly negotiating directly with Trump over the phone. In a statement, Prabowo called it a new era of mutually beneficial trade between the two nations.

Hasan Nasbi, spokesperson for the Indonesian president, praised the country’s negotiating team for their efforts, noting the importance of the outcome for Indonesia’s economic interests.
