Lufthansa cargo joins Silicon Saxony

Lufthansa Cargo has become the first airline to join Silicon Saxony, Europe’s largest high-tech industry network, marking a significant step in aligning global air freight logistics with the demands of the fast-growing semiconductor sector.

Effective July 2025, the air cargo carrier is now a member of the Dresden-based network, which unites more than 600 members from across the microelectronics, semiconductor, and IT industries.

The regional hub of Silicon Saxony is considered the epicenter of semiconductor manufacturing in Europe, housing a broad spectrum of players from multinational technology firms and startups to leading research institutions.

Lufthansa Cargo’s membership represents a strategic alignment with a sector that is increasingly dependent on fast, secure, and resilient supply chains.

The company aims to contribute its logistics expertise to help address the time-sensitive and high-value nature of semiconductor transportation.

Carolin Gerstenmaier, Head of Industry Development at Lufthansa Cargo, said that the semiconductor industry is characterized by highly sensitive, time-critical supply chains.

Through participation in working groups, expert forums, and industry events, Lufthansa Cargo plans to gain deeper insights into the semiconductor industry’s evolving logistics needs and fine-tune its specialized air freight offerings, which already include services for delicate wafers, temperature-controlled microchips, and oversized production equipment.

Frank Bösenberg, Managing Director of Silicon Saxony commented that this partnership allows them to deepen the focus on transport and logistics key enablers of success for the globally integrated semiconductor value chain.

As demand surges for semiconductors amid global digitalization and geopolitical competition, ensuring stable, sustainable transport solutions has become a mission-critical priority and the German carrier aims to be at the forefront of that transformation.
