Port of Long Beach new battery project under review

The Port of Long Beach is asking for public input on a proposed 70-megawatt battery energy storage system (BESS) planned for the Pier S area.

The project would be built on nearly 3 acres at the Long Beach Power Plant property and is designed to support California’s transition to renewable energy by boosting grid reliability.

Two public scoping meetings are scheduled: an in-person session on Wednesday, Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. at the Port’s Administrative Building, and a virtual meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 20 at 2 p.m.

The facility would include about 100 metal enclosures containing lithium-ion batteries, a new 66-kilovolt substation, and various support systems. It also calls for demolishing three buildings and removing parts of old saltwater intake pipes.

The Port is accepting written comments on the project’s environmental impact through Friday, Aug. 29 at 4 p.m. Comments can be sent by email or mail to the Port’s Environmental Planning team.

This proposal aligns with the Port’s Green Port Policy, which focuses on sustainability and environmental stewardship.
