Seaspan orders 12 New 9,000 TEU containerships

According to DynaLiners, Seaspan has confirmed a new shipbuilding order with China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC) for twelve 9,000 TEU containerships. The deal splits construction between two of CSSC’s leading yards. Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding will build eight vessels, while Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding will deliver the other four.

Industry sources suggest the ships are likely to be chartered to Cosco Shipping Lines, although neither party has formally announced the arrangement. If confirmed, the deal would further strengthen ties between Seaspan and Cosco, one of its long-standing charter partners.

Seaspan, part of Atlas Corp, is the world’s largest independent containership owner. The company controls a fleet of more than 150 vessels on long-term charter to major liner operators. Its strategy has focused on providing modern, fuel-efficient ships to carriers without them having to commit capital to newbuild programs themselves.

The new 9,000 TEU vessels will add to Seaspan’s growing pipeline of ships under construction, which already includes dual-fuel and alternative-fuel designs. The order also reflects the strong demand for mid-size ships, which continue to play a key role on both mainline and regional trades.

This latest deal underscores how owners and carriers are preparing for the next phase of container shipping, with investment flowing into new tonnage despite current market volatility.
