Fukui and ClassNK collaborate on hydrogen engine safety valves

Fukui Seisakusho and ClassNK have signed a new MOU to jointly develop ultra-high pressure safety relief valves for hydrogen dual-fuel engines. The signing took place at Gastech 2025 in Milan, Italy.

The two companies first agreed in 2023 to study safety relief valves for liquefied hydrogen carriers. That work led to type approval of the PILOT-type low-pressure safety relief valve (PSL-MD) earlier this year.

Building on this success, Fukui and ClassNK will now focus on valves that meet advanced technical requirements for hydrogen dual-fuel engines. This includes material resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and high-performance sealing for fuel systems.

Under the collaboration, Fukui will develop RPS-type high-pressure valves, while ClassNK will review the valves for type approval according to its rules.

The partnership aims to support the wider adoption of hydrogen as a marine fuel and advance safer, cleaner propulsion systems.
