PaxOcean–ABB electric tug reaches major milestone

PaxOcean Group and ABB have reached a key milestone on Singapore’s first fully electric tug. The vessel, PXO-ACE-1, has completed commissioning ahead of its planned deployment in April 2026.

PaxOcean Group, a subsidiary of Kuok Maritime Group, built the 50-ton bollard pull tug. ABB supplied the integrated electric propulsion system. The system enables fully emission-free harbor operations.

PXO-ACE-1 is the first fully electric tug built and operated in Singapore. The vessel supports the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore’s harbor craft electrification strategy. From 2030, all new harbor vessels must be fully electric or compatible with B100 biofuels or net-zero fuels.

Battery power cuts emissions, noise, and vibration. It also improves air quality and crew comfort.

ABB’s Onboard DC Grid™ with PEMS™ manages the vessel’s power. The system optimizes the use of the three-megawatt-hour battery pack and delivers instant high torque. Its modular design improves efficiency and extends operating range.

Tan Thai Yong, Managing Director and CEO of PaxOcean Group, said the project marks a major step in maritime decarbonization. He said ABB ensured reliable integration of power, propulsion, and bridge systems.

Olli Tuunainen, Local Business Line Manager at ABB Marine & Ports Singapore, said ABB is proud to support Singapore’s move to electric harbor operations. He added that the project will serve as a blueprint for wider electrification in Asia.
