RINA and HPC to drive green port transformation in Caspian Region

RINA and HPC Hamburg Port Consulting have won a five-year OSCE contract for the “Promoting Green Ports and Connectivity in the Caspian Sea Region” project. The initiative targets Baku (Azerbaijan), Aktau and Kuryk (Kazakhstan), Turkmenbashi (Turkmenistan), and Batumi (Georgia), aiming to decarbonize port operations, boost digitalisation, and strengthen regional trade connectivity along the Middle Corridor.

The project introduces a five-pillar framework covering renewable energy, climate resilience, digital monitoring, gender equality, and training. RINA and HPC will provide tailored analyses, technical specifications for pilot projects, and institutional support to advance low-carbon and digitally-enabled port operations.

Key activities include renewable energy feasibility studies, climate adaptation planning, digital system design, gender-responsive policy implementation, and training programs with online courses and study visits to European ports.

OSCE’s Giulia Manconi highlighted that the project will secure long-term sustainability and resilience while fostering cross-regional knowledge sharing. RINA’s Cristina Migliaro emphasized translating technical and sustainability expertise into practical green port solutions. HPC’s Frank Busse noted the focus on empowering local authorities for informed, sustainable decision-making.

By project’s end, participating ports will have climate and energy-transition roadmaps, pilot project blueprints, and strengthened institutional capacity, supported by a regional cooperation platform to ensure lasting green and digital transformation.
