MOL and ITOCHU partner to cut transport emissions
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) and ITOCHU Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding to promote decarbonization in the transportation sector through the use of Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs).
The partnership links shipping and aviation in what MOL describes as Japan’s first collaborative model spanning both sectors. The two companies will work together on marketing, sales, and communications to expand the use of EACs and help transport users reduce Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions.
As part of the agreement, MOL and ITOCHU carried out a reciprocal EAC transaction. MOL purchased aviation-related EACs from ITOCHU to offset emissions from employee air travel, while ITOCHU purchased maritime transport EACs from MOL to address emissions from sea freight. The transaction was executed via the Netherlands-based 123Carbon platform, which manages the issuance, transfer, and retirement of certificates under an audited and transparent framework.

The initiative addresses a key challenge in decarbonization: reducing Scope 3 emissions across complex supply chains while ensuring traceability. MOL will contribute its expertise in low-carbon marine fuels, while ITOCHU will leverage its experience with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
The partnership aligns with MOL’s Environmental Vision 2.2 and its “BLUE ACTION NET-ZERO ALLIANCE” carbon insetting and book-and-claim program launched in February 2025. Both companies said they aim to build a scalable framework that supports customers in cutting emissions across the wider transportation supply chain.
