U.S. Expands Export Restrictions on Additional Chinese Companies

On March 25, the Trump administration took significant steps to tighten restrictions on foreign companies, expanding the list of those prohibited from accessing American technology and exports due to national security issues, as reported by the New York Times.

This latest move saw 80 new entities added to the Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry Security’s entity list, with a focus on Chinese firms that have been major purchasers of U.S. semiconductor products from companies like Nvidia, Intel, and AMD. The administration also aimed to close loopholes that had previously allowed these firms to continue their technological advancements despite existing U.S. restrictions.

The updated entity list includes 54 organizations from China along with several others from countries such as Iran,Pakistan, south Africa, the UAE,and Taiwan.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick emphasized this commitment: “We will leverage every resource available at our disposal to keep our most advanced technologies away from those who pose a threat to Americans.” He added that fostering American innovation is crucial for maintaining economic dominance.

The newly listed entities have been linked to various activities including supporting Pakistan’s nuclear initiatives and missile programs, enhancing China’s capabilities in quantum technology and hypersonic weaponry, as well as attempting to bypass U.S.sanctions related to Iran.
