Vattenfall Approves Development of Germany’s Largest Offshore Wind Energy Project

Swedish energy company Vattenfall has given the green light for the Nordlicht 1 and 2 wind farms, set to rise off Germany’s northern coast. When completed, these projects will form the largest offshore wind park in the country. Construction kicks off in 2026, with an anticipated operational date of 2028.

This enterprising wind park will feature a total of 112 Vestas V236 turbines, each boasting a capacity of 15 MW. In total, they’ll generate an extraordinary combined output of 1.61 GW—980 MW from Nordlicht 1 and another 630 MW from Nordlicht 2. To put that into perspective, this project is expected to produce around 6 TWh annually—enough electricity to power a nuclear plant!

Located about 50 miles from Borkum Island, this initiative marks a significant step toward Germany’s goal of achieving fossil fuel independence. Helene Biström,who heads Vattenfall’s Wind Business area, emphasizes that this project not only supports Germany’s energy transition but also fosters industrial decarbonization while promoting innovation and sustainability within the sector.

In an exciting twist for eco-conscious construction practices, some steel used in building these turbines will be sourced through low-carbon methods—cutting emissions per ton from a hefty 2.6 tons of CO2 down to just about 0.9 tons.

germany currently boasts around 1,600 offshore wind turbines with a total capacity of approximately 9.2 GW—ranking it third globally after China and the UK. Together these three nations account for over three-quarters of all installed offshore wind capacity worldwide.

As we look ahead at renewable energy developments like Nordlicht, it’s clear that countries are increasingly prioritizing enduring solutions—not just for environmental reasons but also as part of their economic strategies moving forward!
