WASHINGTON — As Easter approaches, Majority Leader John Thune has indicated that the Senate will prioritize discussions around nominees from the Trump administration alongside a critically important budget and tax proposal.

Starting in April, Republicans are gearing up to unveil drafts of a significant budget reconciliation bill aimed at encapsulating President Donald Trump’s domestic policy vision. Thune (R-S.D.) noted that this reconciliation effort will run parallel to the Senate’s review of key nominees for high-profile positions within agencies like the Federal Highway Administration.

The nominees for FHWA and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration—Sean McMaster and Derek Barrs—are currently awaiting their hearings before relevant Senate committees.

The upcoming budget reconciliation measure is crucial as it only requires simple majorities in both chambers for approval. Republican leaders aim to wrap up this process by Memorial Day, with transportation policy committees set to hold hearings focused on their contributions.

Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) are urging committee heads to expedite negotiations this spring. “House Republicans have already passed a bill funding government operations through fiscal year-end; now we shift back towards delivering President Trump’s complete ‘America First’ agenda,” Johnson stated on March 24 alongside his leadership team.

The House GOP leadership emphasized their commitment: “We want to present one cohesive bill that secures borders, maintains low taxes for families and businesses, boosts economic growth, restores energy independence, promotes peace through strength, and enhances government accountability.”
