Trump's New Ambassador in Panama Highlights China's Challenge to a Fragile Partnership

Strengthening U.S.-Panama Relations Amidst Rising Tensions with China

PANAMA CITY, May 8 – The newly appointed U.S. ambassador to Panama, Kevin Cabrera, made a bold statement on Thursday about enhancing the partnership between the United States and Panama while highlighting concerns over China’s growing influence in the region. “My top priority is to work together against detrimental influences like those from China,” Cabrera shared during a press briefing at his residence.

Cabrera’s arrival comes at a time when relations between Washington and Panama have been strained. The ambassador pointed out that China’s involvement in Panama has drawn criticism from various quarters, including former President Donald Trump, who previously expressed intentions to reclaim control over the Panama Canal from Chinese interests.

“China isn’t an ideal partner for either Panama or our hemisphere,” Cabrera remarked, emphasizing that both nations would focus on combating drug trafficking and enhancing security measures around the vital waterway of the canal.

In response to these comments, representatives from China’s embassy in Panama quickly dismissed Cabrera’s claims as “inaccurate.” They referenced statements made by Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino denying any Chinese interference regarding the canal operations. A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy highlighted that their collaboration with Panama under initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative has yielded positive outcomes.

Additionally, they noted that relevant authorities in China are conducting an antitrust review as per legal standards—aligning with international norms. This comes amid ongoing scrutiny; earlier this month, investigations were launched by Panama’s Attorney General into contracts awarded to Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison for managing two ports within its borders. As these diplomatic dynamics unfold,it remains crucial for both countries to navigate their relationship carefully while addressing external pressures effectively.
