Houthi Ceasefire: Diego Garcia's Unwavering Activity Continues
The U.S. seems too be pulling back several B-2 Spirit bombers from Diego Garcia,a key naval base in the british Indian Ocean. On May 9,three of these aircraft were spotted being refueled as they made their way across Northern Australia, heading back to Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri.
This withdrawal likely follows the Houthi proclamation about halting attacks on shipping in the Red Sea,despite their ongoing missile strikes against Israel.
The recent agreement mediated by Oman between the U.S. and Houthis included a demand for an end to attacks on Israel; however, this request was turned down by the Houthis. Despite this setback for Washington’s objectives—aiming to curb all external missile and drone activities—the U.S. accepted their stance and scaled back its air operations.
The Houthis have managed to maintain enough of their military capabilities post-agreement to continue striking at israeli targets while framing it as a win for their cause supporting Palestine.
This deal also allows them to quickly resume attacks on maritime traffic if they choose to accuse America of backing Israeli actions further. Shipping companies are likely aware of this lingering threat and may opt for longer routes around africa’s Cape of Good Hope—an adjustment that could strain resources in an already saturated shipping market.
