ClassNK has rolled out its new “Guidelines for Safe Operation of ammonia-Powered Vessels,” aimed at ensuring that crews can operate these ships safely.

These guidelines are all about keeping seafarers safe while navigating the waters with ammonia-fueled vessels. They highlight essential practices for daily operations, including what to do if there’s an ammonia leak and the necesary personal protective equipment (PPE) and emergency gear needed in such situations.

As the shipping industry pushes towards decarbonization, nearly 40% of new vessel orders are now for alternative fuel ships, a trend that’s only expected to grow. Though,it’s vital to note that fuels like ammonia come with their own set of risks that traditional heavy oils don’t present.Unluckily, there’s still a knowledge gap when it comes to operating these types of vessels.

To bridge this gap, ClassNK has compiled insights from both Japan and international sources into these guidelines. They cover everything from transportation and storage protocols to operational best practices specifically tailored for those working on ammonia-powered ships.
