CPGs Prioritize Efficiency Amid Rising Costs and Automation Trends, Reveals PMMI

A recent PMMI report highlights a clear message from consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies and their partners: boosting productivity is the top goal for 2025. The Embracing Operational Readiness survey revealed that a whopping 78% of participants prioritize productivity over other issues like cost and automation, both sitting at 47%.

These insights emerged from PMMI’s annual Top to Top Summit, where industry leaders in packaging, processing, and supply chain gathered to tackle common challenges. This year’s discussions revolved around three key operational themes: accelerating vertical startups, enhancing operator training, and improving IT-OT integration.

Participants emphasized that successful vertical startups hinge on close collaboration between OEMs and CPGs right from the start. Training programs that address real-world challenges—such as language differences, employee turnover, and shift changes—are notably effective. Many attendees praised the use of digital tools like interactive manuals or augmented reality to make training more engaging.

On the technology front, merging IT with operations remains a tricky endeavor. Concerns about cybersecurity loom large alongside the need for justifying investments in new systems.

“Technology can be a game-changer when used wisely,” noted jorge Izquierdo, VP of Market Growth at PMMI. “by refining processes and nurturing skilled workers while harnessing their IT-OT capabilities effectively, companies can foster an habitat primed for operational success.”

In essence, as CPG firms gear up for future challenges in productivity enhancement through innovative strategies and collaborative efforts with tech partners—think about how industries like automotive or electronics might also benefit from similar approaches!
