Edinburgh Trams Introduces Seamless Tap-On, Tap-Off Ticketing System

In the UK, Edinburgh Trams has introduced a new pay-as-you-go system using contactless bank cards as of May 19. This initiative, known as ToTo, is a collaboration with Flowbird and enhances the existing TapTapCap system already in use by Lothian Buses for integrated ticketing across different transport modes.

The great news? Tram and bus fares are automatically capped at the lowest daily or weekly rates. However, tram riders must remember to tap off at the platform validator when they exit; otherwise, they risk being charged a hefty £7.90 premium fare for trips to the airport zone due to an incomplete journey registration. It’s worth noting that each contactless card can only cover one standard adult fare—families or groups shoudl still opt for tickets from vending machines or through apps.

Flowbird has equipped Edinburgh with 110 platform validators and 60 handheld ticketing devices, all supported by their CloudFare back-office system integrated with lothian Buses. These validators are cleverly powered through lighting columns on-site.
