North Korea Rescues Flipped Warship Following Failed Launch, Sources Reveal

SEOUL, June 4 (Reuters) – A recent publication by Reuters indicates that North Korea has managed to reposition its troubled Choe Hyun Class destroyer, which had partially capsized during a failed launch event. this incident was witnessed by Kim Jong Un, who expressed that the mishap tarnished the nation’s reputation and promised repercussions for those accountable.

According to satellite images taken on June 2, this marks the first time since the May 21 incident that the destroyer has been seen upright. the report from the 38 North program, which focuses on North Korea’s military developments, highlighted efforts underway at Chongjin port to restore the vessel. Following the accident, several officials were reportedly detained as part of an internal investigation. The imagery revealed workers engaged in manual labor to right the ship using tethers and possibly barrage balloons. Though, it appears that while they have made progress in getting it upright again, there is still damage visible at its bow and sonar section. To fully repair this warship will require moving it out of water into a floating drydock or graving dock—facilities not available at Chongjin’s shipyard. Experts note that this yard primarily produces cargo and fishing vessels and lacks experience with large naval ships like this new destroyer.

while North Korea is making strides toward rectifying this embarrassing situation under Kim’s directive before an upcoming party meeting, significant challenges remain due to infrastructure limitations in their shipbuilding capabilities.
