Automated Precision: How Robots Secure Container Wagon Pins

According to a recent publication by Hamburger Hafen & Logistik and teh Fraunhofer Center for Maritime Logistics & Services, an innovative autonomous mobile robot has been successfully trialed for automating the repositioning of folding pins on container wagons in Germany.

Traditionally, adjusting these pins to fit different container sizes has been a labor-intensive task. The Pin Handling mR initiative explored how an autonomous robot arm could streamline this process at HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort, with support from HHLA’s rail division, Metrans.

This cutting-edge robot demonstrated its ability to navigate along a container train autonomously while accurately positioning the pins with remarkable efficiency.

“Our research indicates that automating pin handling in rail operations is not just possible but practical,” stated Pablo Rossio, Project Manager at HHLA. “The findings from this project will guide us as we explore its potential for real-world request. By leveraging our extensive network across terminals and subsidiaries like HHLA Sky and Metrans,we’re enhancing safety and efficiency in terminal operations. Our next steps involve refining this technology for everyday use.”

This initiative received backing from the Federal ministry for Digital & Transport through its IHATEC programme aimed at promoting autonomous systems within port environments.
