A recent report from Global News highlights that a humanitarian vessel named Madleen, carrying 12 activists including the renowned Greta Thunberg, set sail from Catania, Italy, on June 1, 2025. This mission aims to deliver crucial supplies to Gaza amidst ongoing tensions in the region.

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC) is behind this initiative, marking their second attempt in just five weeks after their previous ship, Conscience, was targeted by Israeli drones en route to Gaza on May 2. While Israel has yet to officially respond to these claims, there are reports of implicit threats directed at the Madleen as it carries essential items like baby formula, rice, flour, diapers for women’s hygiene needs, water purification kits, crutches for mobility assistance and prosthetics for children.

The ship is named in honor of Madleen Kulab—Gaza’s first female fisherwoman—who used to fish within the limits set by the Israeli blockade before hostilities intensified in October 2023. The blockade has turned Gaza into what many refer to as “the world’s largest open-air prison.”

FFC describes its mission as a peaceful act of civil disobedience aimed at ending what thay call an illegal blockade. They emphasize that all crew members and volunteers aboard are unarmed civilians committed to humanitarian efforts.

Among those on board besides Thunberg are Rima hassan—a French-Palestinian member of the European Parliament; Yasmine Acar—a German activist and researcher; Omar Faid—a journalist with Al Jazeera; and several others hailing from various countries including Brazil and turkey. Each individual brings unique perspectives and experiences related to activism and humanitarian work.

FFC acknowledges the risks involved with this voyage given past incidents like that involving Conscience. As Madleen approaches Gazan waters soon—its fate remains uncertain regarding whether it will be allowed entry or face resistance from Israeli forces. an IDF spokesperson has stated they will take necessary actions if provoked at sea.

to ensure transparency during its journey towards Gaza via the Mediterranean Sea south of Crete Island—the crew is actively broadcasting their real-time location for global awareness.
