Romania Expands Rail Fleet with New Pesa Trains as Regional EMU Makes Debut
According to a recent declaration from RomaniaS national railway reform authority,ARF,Pesa has rolled out the first of 62 three-car regional electric multiple-units (EMUs) designed for their network.
On May 14,ARF revealed that it had updated its agreement with Pesa Bydgoszcz. This update, confirmed in June 2024, includes the delivery of an additional nine inter-regional EMUs on top of the previously contracted 20 type RE-IR2 InterRegio units.
This arrangement also encompasses a complete maintenance plan lasting for 15 years covering all 29 trainsets. Funded by the EU’s Modernisation Fund, this deal is valued at approximately 1.6 billion lei.
The inaugural trainset is set to arrive in September, with all units expected to be delivered by late 2027.
The addition of nine new three-car inter-regional EMUs from Pesa has been officially announced by ARF.
The new EMUs will operate at speeds up to 160 km/h and can accommodate up to 191 seated passengers. They will feature advanced onboard systems including ETCS and Romania’s own PZB90 train protection technology.
pesa Unveils First Regional EMU
Around May 22, Pesa showcased the first unit from its batch of Regio160 regional emus intended for ARF under a different contract. These trains are aimed at enhancing service on routes around București, Cluj-Napoca, and Suceava.
The Regio160 models are engineered for speeds reaching up to 160 km/h. Each train measures about 77.2 meters in length and can carry a total of up to465 passengers—238 seated—including provisions for folding seats as well. p>“This project presents notable challenges due to tight timelines,” noted Maciej Maciejewski, Vice President for Sales at Pesa. “It’s incredibly rewarding that we’ve managed to deliver our first vehicle on time; we’ll soon begin testing at Făurei.” p>
