Revolutionizing Comfort: Cairo Metro Line 1 Introduces Its First Air-Conditioned Trains to Meet Rising Passenger Needs
According too a recent publication by Alstom, the first of 55 nine-car trainsets for Cairo’s metro Line 1 was delivered on May 22. This new addition reached the capital just a week after arriving at Alexandria’s port.
This initiative stems from a contract signed in November 2021, worth €876 million, where Alstom is set to provide these modern Metropolis trainsets.The financing comes courtesy of an agreement wiht the French government,wich also covers maintenance and spare parts for eight years.
The introduction of these trainsets aims to enhance capacity on Line 1,which currently serves around 2.5 million passengers daily along its existing route of approximately 44 kilometers. Additionally, they will facilitate an upcoming northern extension from New Marj to Shabin Al-Qanater.
This fleet marks a notable upgrade as it will be the first on Line 1 equipped with air-conditioning systems.
Apart from climate control, passengers can expect features like spacious gangways, internal and external CCTV for safety, real-time updates about their journey, dynamic route maps displayed on screens, and designated areas for wheelchair users.
In line with efforts to modernize this historic metro line that began operations in ’87 , CAF alongside Mitsubishi has been tasked with refurbishing and maintaining an additional fleet of existing trains over two years.Furthermore , under a substantial €850 million contract awarded in September ’24 , a consortium comprising Colas Rail , Orascom Construction , and Hitachi Rail is set to revamp various systems including signaling , control mechanisms , telecommunications infrastructure , power supplies as well as renewing tracks. div >
