Navigating the Complexities of Tariffs and Supply Chain Disruptions
According to a recent publication by Siemens Digital Logistics, tariffs can be quite disruptive, but Volker Albrecht, the company’s CEO, believes that supply chain managers will navigate these challenges just as they have tackled various disruptions in recent years.
Albrecht points out that the European perspective on President Trump’s tariffs tends to be more pragmatic compared to the emotional responses often seen in the U.S. He views tariff volatility as yet another hurdle for supply chain professionals to overcome. Just like they adapted during the pandemic and managed through incidents like the Suez Canal blockage, he suggests that “[Tariffs] are merely another disruption; hopefully our clients have gleaned valuable insights from past experiences.” He emphasizes that it’s crucial for businesses to remain vigilant since future disruptions are inevitable.
This time around, however, there’s a notable difference: “Consumers will feel an immediate impact—not just within supply chains but also regarding product pricing,” he explains. This reality prompts leaders to rethink their strategies and implement changes in their supply chains swiftly to mitigate costs that might otherwise be passed on to consumers.
When it comes to artificial intelligence (AI), Albrecht adopts a more cautious stance than some of his peers. While he acknowledges AI’s permanence and ongoing advancements in technology, he feels it’s currently overhyped without any standout applications making waves just yet.
“One might wonder,” he adds thoughtfully, “how does this differ from machine learning? We’ve been utilizing it for network designs and optimization for many years now—almost decades! Is AI simply an evolution of what we already know or is it genuinely revolutionary?”
Despite his reservations about its current state, Albrecht sees potential in agentic AI. He believes it coudl significantly influence and ultimately lead to “massive change” within supply chains down the line.
