Innovative Train Oversight and Control System Set for Launch in Western Australia

According to a recent publication by the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC), 4Tel has secured a contract to implement the Train management & Control System (TMACS) over an impressive stretch of 1,276 kilometers across the Nullarbor Plain, linking Tarcoola in South Australia with Kalgoorlie in Western Australia.

the system is set to be operational by late 2026.

TMACS leverages virtual block technology, enabling seamless communication of essential voice and electronic movement authorities from network control directly to train operators. It also issues electronic work permits for track maintainance crews and integrates smoothly with ARTC’s eTAP mobile application utilized by both track workers and vehicles.

Brad Moorhouse, who oversees Safety & Systems at ARTC, emphasized that this initiative will enhance train control technology along a vital freight route. He noted that it would minimize dependence on outdated manual systems while introducing advanced safety protocols grounded in engineering principles.

This innovative software is already operational on over 5,000 kilometers of remote and regional tracks throughout New South Wales.

“Since its initial rollout in 2001, TMACS has demonstrated consistent safety and reliability,” stated Tony Crosby, CEO of 4Tel. He highlighted that train operators as well as maintenance teams will experience improved risk management through features like electronic authorities and alerts for out-of-authority situations or proximity concerns within this corridor.
