Moscow Expands Its Metro Fleet with 704 New Trains
as reported by local authorities, the Mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, has finalized a deal with Transmashholding for the acquisition of 704 new metro cars intended for the city’s transit system, dubbed Moskva-2026.
This agreement not only covers the delivery of these vehicles but also includes a comprehensive maintenance plan that spans three decades.
The contract was officially signed during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on June 19.During this event,Transmashholding showcased a prototype of their latest metro design.This new model builds upon the existing moskva-2024 fleet with some enhancements such as an innovative headlight system that automatically dims when approaching stations. Additionally, there will be updates too the cab’s interior color scheme and integration of transparent screens into side windows.
The delivery timeline for these metro cars is set between 2026 and early 2027, with plans to operate them on both Zamoskvoretskaya and Troitskaya lines.
A further agreement was established to foster ongoing collaboration between Moscow officials and Transmashholding, which anticipates additional metro car deliveries through to the year 2030.
Sobyanin’s office highlighted that in recent years, Moscow Metro has excelled in Europe regarding its rate of rolling stock upgrades. This success is attributed to effective partnerships between city leaders and Transmashholding. As around a decade ago, modern trains have surged from making up just about thirteen percent of Moscow’s fleet to over seventy-seven percent today. Last year saw the introduction of more cozy models from the Moskva-2024 series—designed based on feedback from both passengers and operators—on key lines like Zamoskvoretskaya and Troitskaya.
