A successful performance by a teen in Greece’s annual university entrance
A successful performance by a teen in Greece’s annual university entrance exams continues to carry “special weight” for most families in the country, yet for the adolescents themselves the education system has mostly failed them.
Those are the highlights of a recent study conducted in the country by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, in cooperation with the National Centre for Social Research (ΕΚΚΕ).
Specifically, most young people surveyed in the study are unhappy with Greece’s educational system, especially by pupils in the secondary level.
Specifically, 47.6% of respondents said they were absolutely not satisfied or mostly unsatisfied with the quality of Greece’s education system.
For pupils in the 14 to 18 age group, the figure rises to 53.9%.
The stressful and unforgiving national exams – held in early June every year – appear as the major cause for this dissatisfaction, as the entire high school system is deemed to be preparatory for this procedure, i.e. entry into universities, and in particular the school in high demand, such as medical schools and polytechnics.
The study was conducted in 2024 on a sample of 1,000 young people between the ages of 14 and 29.
