The estimated resources range from 0.1 to 1.1 million standard cubic metres (mscm), with reservoir properties rated from moderate to very good.

The preliminary name for the discovery, which was made around 9km north of the Troll field, is F-South.

Equinor Exploration & Production senior vice-president Geir Sørtveit said: “These are discoveries in an interesting area with a well-developed infrastructure.

“In recent years, we have made several discoveries in the neighbourhood, and we plan to further explore the area. We believe that we may encounter more, both oil and gas.”

The licensees, which include Equinor Energy at 45%, Vår Energi at 40% and INPEX Idemitsu Norge at 15%, are now evaluating options to connect F-South to existing or future infrastructure.

The well was drilled by the COSL Innovator rig and is situated in production licence 090, where other discoveries such as Echino South, Swisher and Blasto have been made since 2019.

Echino South and Blasto, in conjunction with two smaller finds, form the foundation for the Fram South development.

The development plan for this subsea project was submitted to authorities in June 2025.

Equinor Energy and its partners recently reported a substantial gas discovery in the Skred prospect of the Barents Sea.
