Genoa Port signs new regulation for LNG ship bunkering operations

Genoa Port Authority during a conference has issued new LNG bunkering regulations at the Fincantieri shipyard.

On 14 April in Genoa, during the conference “The New Sustainable Marine Fuels – Decarbonize Shipping” organized by the Port Authority, Admiral Pellizzari, Maritime Director of Liguria, signed a new regulation governing LNG ship-to-ship bunkering operations at the Fincantieri shipyard in Genoa Sestri Ponente.

It is reported that the regulation includes a thorough risk analysis to define controlled zones and a safety zone, where only strictly necessary operations are permitted. It outlines authorization procedures, responsibilities, operational conditions, protocols for extreme weather and sea states, as well as both active and passive safety measures and emergency procedures.

As an example, prolonged mooring of the barge is prohibited and only temporary anchorage in the roadstead is allowed and only if the tanks are inerted and certified.

The activities are subject to international standards (IGC, IGF, ISO/UNI codes) and both the barge and the vessel under construction must meet specific technical and operational requirements. Additionally, all personnel involved must hold certified training in accordance with the STCW Convention.
