U.S. container imports from Asia rise

U.S. containerized imports from 10 major Asian economies totaled 9.85 million TEUs in the first half of 2025, up 3.9% year-on-year, according to the Japan International Freight Forwarders Association (JIFFA), citing data from Descartes Datamyne and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Total U.S. imports during the same period rose 4% to 13.88 million TEUs.

By country, imports from China dropped 3.7% to 5.14 million TEUs, while volumes from Vietnam surged 35.5% to 1.22 million TEUs. South Korea matched that figure with a 3.5% increase. Imports also rose from Singapore (455,856 TEUs) and Taiwan (454,206 TEUs), both up 3.5%. Japan’s share declined 7% to 211,750 TEUs.

In June, imports from the 10 Asian countries fell 8.5% year-on-year to 1.54 million TEUs, but were up 3.3% from May. China saw a sharp drop of 24.1% to 733,418 TEUs, though it remained the top source. Vietnam rose 57.5% to 245,985 TEUs, while imports from South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan declined.
