Potsdam Introduces Its Authentic European Tram Experience
POTSDAM, GERMANY: The local transit authority, Verkehrsbetrieb Potsdam, has introduced its inaugural Stadler Tramlink tram. According to Technical Director Uwe Loeschmann, this new addition is set to redefine the city’s landscape for many years ahead.
The order for these trams was placed back in December 2021, initially securing ten units with an option for three more. Stadler will handle maintenance for a decade, with a potential six-year extension available.
This tramlink model stretches to 42 meters—12 meters longer than the current Variobahns in use. It boasts a width of 2,300 mm and can accommodate up to 246 passengers at once; this includes seating for 74 individuals and features four multifunctional spaces designed specifically for accessibility needs.
Diving into the details during the launch event on March 24th, Jure Mikolčić, CEO of Stadler’s German division remarked that “this tram has traveled quite a distance—from shell production in Poland to assembly in Spain before making its way by land and sea to Potsdam. It truly embodies European collaboration.”
