IAG Secures Deal for 71 New Long-Haul Jets

Teh International Airlines Group (IAG) has just made a big splash in the aviation world by announcing plans to expand its widebody fleet significantly. Thay’ve placed an order for 71 new long-haul aircraft, which is a major step forward in their long-term vision. This announcement comes on the heels of impressive financial results for Q1 2025, were IAG reported a revenue increase of 9.6% and a pre-extraordinary profit of €198 million—€130 million more than last year’s figures.

“We’re excited to share our Q1 financial results for 2025. It’s been an excellent start to the year with revenue growth at 9.6%. Our profit before exceptional items reached €198 million, marking an increase of €130 million from the same quarter last year.”

This fleet expansion isn’t just about passenger travel; it also has notable implications for IAG Cargo, which heavily depends on bellyhold capacity from its passenger airlines like British Airways and Iberia. The new aircraft will enhance cargo capabilities as well.

The introduction of these next-gen planes over the next decade will bolster IAG’s presence across transatlantic and intercontinental routes, improving fuel efficiency while expanding cargo lift at a time when global supply chains are evolving rapidly.

“These new aircraft will help us strengthen our core markets and enhance customer experience while driving long-term value for shareholders,” stated IAG via LinkedIn.

This investment aligns with IAG’s broader transformation strategy that focuses on modernizing their fleet and achieving sustainability goals. While specific aircraft types haven’t been disclosed yet, there are hints that they might include Boeing 787 Dreamliners alongside Airbus models.

For the cargo side of things, this expansion in long-haul bellyhold capacity comes at a crucial time as sectors like e-commerce,pharmaceuticals,and aerospace continue to thrive—especially along key routes such as North Atlantic and Asia-Europe corridors. Just like previous orders have shown us, leaders within IAG Cargo will likely influence how these new planes are configured to maximize uplift potential across various routes.
