Wheat Cargo Ship Reaches Turkiye on Its Journey to Alleviate Crisis in Affected Areas

A humanitarian aid vessel carrying 20,000 tons of wheat from Ukraine has arrived at Toros Port in Samsun, Turkey. This delivery is part of the U.N. World food Programme’s (WFP) efforts to assist regions in crisis, particularly Syria.

The ship, named Brave Commander, was greeted with a ceremony where deputy Governor Kemal Yildiz emphasized its significance as a beacon of unity and compassion for humanity.

Stephen Cahill, the WFP’s country director in Türkiye, highlighted that this vessel was among the first to deliver aid under the Black Sea Grain Corridor initiative launched in 2022. He pointed out Türkiye’s pivotal role in global food distribution; over the last five years, the WFP has procured $1.1 billion worth of food from Turkey for humanitarian efforts worldwide.

Out of this shipment, 5,000 tons will specifically support humanitarian missions in Syria. Cahill remarked on how their partnership with the Turkish government spans various sectors and includes initiatives for Syrian refugees and also broader global outreach.

He also addressed pressing issues faced by regions like Gaza and Yemen and urged nations to unite amid growing fragmentation worldwide. The need for continued support from donors involved in initiatives like the Black Sea Grain Initiative is crucial moving forward.

Ambassador Aylin Sekizkok from Turkey’s foreign Ministry discussed the escalating global food crisis affecting over 840 million people who are currently facing hunger challenges.
