AirBaltic Launches New Era for Baltic Logistics with Cargo Hub Inauguration

On May 22, airBaltic celebrated the launch of its new Baltic Cargo Hub at RIX Riga Airport, a notable addition to the region’s air cargo capabilities. The event attracted around 200 attendees, including Latvia’s Minister of Transport adn various international logistics partners.

The Baltic Cargo Hub spans an remarkable 6,895 m² and is tailored to meet the rising demand for modern air freight solutions at RIX. Strategically located next to the cargo apron and outfitted with cutting-edge semi-automated handling systems, this facility promises rapid and efficient processing of goods. It boasts specialized temperature-controlled areas for sensitive items like pharmaceuticals, and also designated zones for hazardous materials, live animals, and high-value goods. Additionally, integrated Food and Veterinary Service facilities alongside a Customs checkpoint will enhance operational efficiency.

Pauls Cālītis, Interim CEO of airBaltic remarked: “The launch of this hub is a pivotal moment for enhancing our regional air cargo infrastructure. With an annual capacity increase to 45,000 tonnes at Riga Airport available to all carriers aiming to grow in the Baltics, we’re excited about expanding our cargo services further. This isn’t just progress for us; it solidifies Latvia’s position as a vital aviation center in Northern Europe.”

Arvīds Maurāns from the Baltic Cargo Center added: “this hub represents a smart investment into agile cargo operations that cater to global needs. Its design emphasizes versatility and efficiency while also supporting international mail flows through Riga with its dedicated sorting facility. This achievement reflects our collective commitment towards enhancing both cargo transport and postal services in Latvia.”

The Baltic Cargo Hub also underscores airBaltic’s dedication to sustainability practices. During construction, Building Details Modeling (BIM) was employed for optimal resource management while adhering to BREEAM standards—setting new environmental benchmarks within aviation development.

This project was realized through collaboration with top industry players; UPB Nams led construction efforts while Ozola un Bula Architect Office handled design aspects alongside technical oversight from BLV Advisory Group.
