GySEV Takes the Helm: A New Era for Hungarian Railways

According to a recent report from MÁV Pályamüködtetési Zrt, Hungary’s national railway infrastructure manager, an agreement has been reached to hand over the maintenance and management of 752 kilometers of railway in the country’s northwest to GySEV.

This operation and cooperation deal, finalized on July 1, transfers all responsibilities related to infrastructure management and upkeep to the Hungarian-Austrian cross-border rail group.

Starting July 1, GySEV also began running passenger services between Zalaegerszeg and Celldömölk. However, further expansion of train operations on these routes hinges on securing appropriate rolling stock.

The routes included in this transfer are:

  • The line from Győrszabadhegy to Celldömölk;
  • The route connecting Győrszabadhegy with Veszprém;
  • A freight-onyl section between veszprémvarsány and Franciavágás;
  • Pápa to csorna;
  • Zalaszentiván through Nagykanizsa;
  • The Porpác – Székesfehérvár line (excluding Székesfehérvár station);
  • Zalaegerszeg heading towards Rédics;
  • A freight-only route from Zalabér-Batyk to zalaszentgrót;
  • Boba connecting with Őriszentpéter;
  • The Ukk – Balatonszentgyörgy stretch (excluding balatonszentgyörgy station);
  • A freight-only segment from Hajmáskér through Csajág (excluding Csajág station);
  • Murakeresztúr linking up with Balatonszentgyörgy; and
  • Murakeresztúr extending towards Gyékényes.

This shift in managing regional rail lines is part of a broader overhaul within Hungary’s rail sector. Notably, the government has increased its investment in GySEV as part of this restructuring effort.
