Exploring the Future of Ocean Freight: A Guide to Evolving Carrier Solutions

According to a recent publication by the Jacksonville Port Authority, Robert Peek, the chief commercial officer, has shared insights on the recent changes in container line alliances and their implications for service quality, trade routes, and port operations along the U.S. East Coast.

In early 2025, we witnessed a meaningful shift in ocean carrier partnerships as two major alliances—the 2M and THE Alliance—where dissolved. They have been replaced by new coalitions known as Gemini Cooperation and Premier Alliance. This shake-up impacts services from many of the world’s leading carriers.

Initially, there were concerns among shippers regarding how these new partnerships woudl affect reliability. However, Peek points out that “the carriers have really delivered” so far.

Peek emphasizes that competition in container shipping has been fierce for years. Yet he warns that if shipping volumes decline due to various trends or disruptions, “you’re going to see that competition intensify quickly.”

The ports on the U.S. East Coast have had to adapt significantly in response to these developments.Peek notes that overall performance has been strong: “The East Coast has done vrey well,” with ports enhancing ship channels, expanding terminal facilities, acquiring new cranes, and improving road and rail networks for last-mile delivery.

“Billions of dollars are being invested into infrastructure at U.S. East Coast ports,” he explains. This investment aims to enable carriers to handle larger vessels while meeting shippers’ demands effectively.” Additionally, a recently finalized multi-year labor agreement with dockworkers is expected to boost business further in this region.

Despite ongoing uncertainties surrounding global trade—which continue to worry both shippers and carriers—these challenges also present fresh opportunities. As Peek puts it: “Current trade policies are fostering an environment where decision-makers within global supply chains can explore innovative solutions like never before.”
