Finnair Cargo Partners with Smart Freight Centre for Enhanced Logistics Solutions
Finnair Cargo has officially become a member of the Smart Freight Center (SFC), a global non-profit focused on minimizing the environmental footprint of freight transport. This organization offers a robust framework for businesses to assess, manage, and lower their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions linked to logistics. With close to 200 members from various sectors, SFC embodies a wide range of industries within the cargo transport landscape.
“We decided to join SFC because it provides an excellent platform for networking and sharing insights with industry peers,” shares Gabriela Hiitola, Senior Vice President at Finnair Cargo. The recent Smart Freight Week 2025 in Amsterdam gathered nearly 1,000 attendees and underscored the pressing need for collaboration and innovation in achieving net-zero logistics.
As part of the SFC community, Finnair Cargo is eager to play its role in advancing decarbonization initiatives within air transport. The airline is dedicated to reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 but has set an aspiring interim goal for 2033—aiming for a reduction of 34.5% in emissions intensity based on its 2023 figures. This target has received validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
“Being part of SFC allows us to exchange knowledge and explore best practices around emissions reporting and decarbonization with organizations that share our vision,” states Janike Heimonen, Sustainability Manager at Finnair Cargo. “This partnership aligns perfectly with our industry’s long-term aim of achieving net-zero emissions; together we can foster significant change towards sustainability.”
for years now, Finnair Cargo has been actively involved in numerous sustainability assessments aimed at enhancing industry standards. The company regularly submits emission data not onyl to IATA’s CO2 Connect but also directly contributes information to SFC.
