Logistics Leader Sounds Alarm on Vulnerable Fresh Produce Supply Chain
This week’s chat with Baroness Hayman about the proposed plant health checks for fresh produce was a letdown. It highlighted yet again how out of touch the government seems to be with the pressing issues we’re facing, ignoring our urgent calls for clarity and action.
As we approach the july 1st deadline for thes checks, it’s clear that those managing imported fresh goods are still in the dark. Despite raising concerns repeatedly over five months, there’s been no reassurance or guidance provided.
Key points we wanted to address included Sevington’s lack of readiness for these checks; a troubling monopoly at government border control that operates around the clock but only conducts inspections at limited hours; an unclear list of fruits and vegetables classified as Medium Risk A&B that will require checks; unconfirmed Common User Charge fees for 2025/26; and ongoing evaluations of the Approved Operator Status scheme—something companies like PML Seafrigo invested in back in 2023.
the industry has been proactive under FPC Chief Executive Nigel Jenney’s leadership, consistently offering practical solutions to navigate this situation.Yet here we are, just weeks away from implementation, stuck where we were last December when they postponed the original January 1st deadline. The narrative suggesting we’re unprepared is misleading—we’ve actively engaged with feedback on these proposed measures and have presented thoughtful alternatives to ensure a smooth transition.
The real issue lies with government readiness—or lack thereof. They seem unwilling to listen to those on the ground who understand what’s needed. If things don’t change soon,we could see important spikes in food prices due to shortages of essential fresh produce.
We need consumers on our side! It’s time for everyone to voice their concerns about governmental delays and stalling tactics regarding initiatives like Approved Operator Status.
The industry is ready and willing to help solve these challenges. But time is ticking—we need decisive action NOW!
