Transitioning to Hydrogen: The Future of Rail Travel on Bayern's Routes
GERMANY: the state of bayern has tapped Siemens Mobility to deliver three hydrogen-powered Mireo Plus H trains, set to replace diesel engines on the Südostbayernbahn routes. This move aims to cut down on noise pollution and harmful emissions.
starting in late 2026, these eco-kind trains will operate across eight stations along the non-electrified stretch from Mühldorf to Tüßling and Burghausen, covering a distance of 32.2 km.Deutsche Bahn is also planning an electrolysis facility in Mühldorf that will run entirely on renewable energy sources. Siemens mobility will oversee the hydrogen supply system.
The Mireo Plus H model boasts a roof-mounted fuel cell paired with underfloor lithium-ion batteries, allowing for acceleration at a rate of 1.1 m/s² and reaching speeds up to 140 km/h with an impressive range of up to 1,200 km. Refueling takes just about 15 minutes!
The two-car units designed for Bayern come equipped with low-floor access for easy boarding, space for nine bicycles, ETCS technology for enhanced safety, and windows that improve mobile reception—perfect for today’s connected travelers.
This marks the second order of Mireo Plus H units; previously, Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn had placed an order for their Heidekrautbahn services.
“We’re excited to provide Deutsche Bahn with our hydrogen trains,” said Andre Rodenbeck, CEO Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility on April 28. “These trains are built using advanced technology that ensures high energy efficiency while being powerful yet quiet.”
Cornelia Würtz from DB RegioNetz Verkehrs emphasized that “hydrogen trains play a crucial role in DBS journey toward climate neutrality.” it’s clear that this initiative not only enhances local transport but also aligns with broader environmental goals—something we can all get behind!
